Two Philadelphia police officers escaped serious injury after a gunman opened fire on their cruiser.
Nearly a dozen shots were fired with at least five of them hitting the unmarked police car in the city’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood Wednesday night, NBC 10 is reporting.
One of the officers was hit by shattered glass and had to be taken to the hospital for stitches to his face and neck, Action News 6 ABC is reporting.
According to reports, the two officers had been following suspects inside a car who had been driving erratically.
After they made a turn near 30th and Dauphin streets, at least one gunman got out of the car and fired at least 11 shots at the officers, reports indicate.
The driving officer put the cruiser in reverse as both ducked for cover, reports indicate.
The gunman’s car drove off. The officers did not return fire, and the one who was injured is in stable condition, according to reports.
“He’s fine, but he’s extremely lucky because the one bullet went through the center of that front windshield,” Philadelphia police Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6 ABC. “Either of these officers could have been struck by gunfire.”
Just before the shooting, the officers were able to give a description of the car and the license plate number, and police already have several leads, reports indicate.
The incident remains under investigation.
